Nutrition Tips for Nursing Moms

For most of you reading this, the term lactation cookies might not interest you, but I promise these are harmless (and tasty) chocolate chip lactation cookies. Only if you are a breastfeeding mom will you potentially benefit from an increase in milk supply (I'm talking to you, gentlemen). And if you have no interest in this, jump ahead to the recipe and enjoy these delicious almond butter chocolate chip cookies!

While there is still not enough evidence out there to make these lactation claims, these foods are excellent sources of nutrients in our diet. Most of these foods are recommended by other moms and scientific research is still out there. If you are a nursing mom and supplementing with these nutrients, please consult your physician first.

A few of the ingredients used in this recipe for these lactation cookies are galactagogues. These are substances (such as in food form) that may help increase breastmilk supply.

  • -Brewer's Yeast
  • -Ground Flax Seed
  • -Oats

Almond Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe...

On a personal note, I started making these cookies when I went back to work since I wasn't feeding on-demand with my little man as much. After a few days, I did notice a difference. Maybe it was a placebo effect, or maybe not. Who knows? Either way, I had a good excuse to enjoy these cookies on a daily basis!

These cookies are not too sweet, making them a fun treat in the morning as a breakfast cookie. If you have a tree nut or peanut allergy, I would recommend sunflower seed butter.

These cookies can be made as lactation cookies or without! If you want a regular cookie, just remove the brewer's yeast. The ground flaxseed and oats are delicious and fiber-rich, so keep them in the recipe!

Ingredients

Scale

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

2 tablespoons ground or milled flaxseed

2 tablespoons brewer’s yeast

½ teaspoon salt

½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature

1 cup almond butter, unsalted

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

2 large eggs, room temperature

½ cup raw sugar

½ cup dark brown sugar

1 ½ cup rolled oats

½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Set aside two greased (or parchment-lined) cookie sheets.

In a medium bowl, stir together the dry ingredients, except the oats and chocolate chips. Set aside.

In a large bowl, cream the butter and almond butter using a handheld mixer or by hand. Stir in the remaining wet ingredients.

Transfer the dry ingredients to the large bowl of wet ingredients and stir to combine. Add in the oats and chocolate chips.

Using a cookie scoop or small spoon, drop one tablespoon of the dough at a time onto the cookie sheet. Make sure cookies are evenly spaced. Bake for 10-12 minutes or once they start to start to brown.

Notes

Optional: chill the dough in the refrigerator for a half hour to an hour prior to scooping the dough on the cookie sheets. This helps form the dough for better shaping.

Jessica I’m so sorry to hear that let me look into this. My almond butter might have had more oil and maybe I need to increase the milk in the recipe

There is no milk at all listed under ingredients. Could you please update it?

        Hi Meaghan,
Sorry for any confusion, but the recipe did not use milk. If the dough does seem dry to you, please feel free to use a tablespoon of milk at a time if you prefer!
        Best,
        Katie
